Wash your sheets separately: Sheets are longer and heavier than regular clothes, which means they have more surface area to create friction. Washing them with other clothes can lead to buttons, zippers, sequins, and hems rubbing against the sheets during the wash. To avoid this, wash your sheets separately. Also, avoid drying them with towels, as towels produce lint that you wouldn’t want on your sheets.

Keep them away from heat: Cotton is a natural fiber, and heat distresses it, putting a burden on the fibers. When washing cotton sheets, use a low water temperature. If you must tumble dry (although line drying is recommended), use a low temperature. Even when ironing, opt for a low temperature. When storing your sheets, keep them in a cool, dry area—avoid plastic containers.

Go easy on the detergent: Detergents can build up on your sheets if you wash them regularly. Consider using a little less detergent than recommended. If you notice detergent build-up over time, try washing your sheets with no detergent at all—just use one cup of baking soda during the wash and one cup of white vinegar during the rinse cycle1.
